How to Plan a Home Renovation Project

We all want the same outcome when we plan a home renovation project- a beautiful space that is purposeful and brings us joy!  Getting to that point, however, requires some prep work.

The guidelines below are part of my initial process that I use to create an interior design concept for my clients. They will work for any type of home improvement project that you have in mind, from bath and kitchen renovations to decorating a room!

So, get out your notebook and let’s write some things down (seriously, don’t try to work this out in your head, you won’t remember it all)! One important thing to note here is, if you share a home with someone that I like to call a “design decision maker”, it is best for you to make this list together.

Dale Carnegie quote on planningGuidelines for Success:
Determine your design dilemma

You have an issue, need, or desire. Something is not working- what is it exactly? If your project involves multiple areas of your home, treat them all separately so nothing gets left out.

Determine your project goals

Write down how you want the space to function and look once it is completed.  I believe it is also important to identify how you want to feel in the space, as this leads to making good aesthetic selections, such as the colors and textures you may use in your home.  Make a need and wants list to include specific items, such as appliances or furnishings. I like to dream big, then go back and highlight my MUST-HAVES or use a numeric system to indicate each items importance factor.

Research Time

Visit stores in your area to find out current costs of items you want to purchase. Gain some understanding on the products quality and longevity. If you are doing a kitchen or bath remodel, make sure to research current remodeling costs in your area. Lastly, start a Pinterest board of rooms, products, and ideas you are drawn to.  I find it helpful to make a note of what you loved about an image or item.  Was it the custom cabinet organization, the tile design, or the color of the sofa that made you stop and stare?

Determine the Investment

You may have initially had a budget in mind, but I recommend reviewing that number again after you have done some research. Does your investment match your needs/wants list and the current costs to remodel and furnish a home? Determine if there is flexibility in your budget or if you may need to tackle your project in stages.

Determine if working with an Interior Designer will benefit you

Remodeling and furnishing a home takes time and it involves making many small decisions that come together to make a big impact! Evaluate your lifestyle to determine how and if a designer can assist you with your project. Most interior designers will offer varying levels of services, from consultations to fully executing an interior design project on your behalf. Do your research to find businesses that align with your values and that you can trust to lead your home renovation project. Make sure to check out their portfolio and meet with them to ensure you feel comfortable working together.
